Oh, thank you for the nice comment. But let’s not get soppy. After only 2 weeks this fucker turned my sheets GRAY when I let him stay at my apartment in Seattle! WTF? But seriously folk, it was great to recite this poem at Doc’s Clock in SF where Scott T, Eric M, Elliot and Dema knew who the poem was about.

I hope you’re well. I like your work. I actually stumbled across you while I was doing research for my Master’s dissertation on the Re-emergence of a literary culture in post-Taliban Afghanistan. Dan: Yes, the choice was wholly stylistic, I just thought it sounded better. As to the post-wagon, that sounds weird to me. I suppose it’s possible, but it seems so specific, compared to the rest of the poem that it seems unlikely to me. That said, my German is quite dreadful. Thanks for the comments.

Nice - I’m surprised that there don’t seem to be any other translations of this floating around online. A couple of comments:

- the end of the first and last verses is repeated (”In der prächtigen Sommernacht.” - but you translate it differently in each verse. Is that deliberate?

- “Ach, wer da mitreisen könnte” - I think the sense of this is “if only I could travel with the post-wagon” rather than “who will travel with me”

[But I could well be wrong on both counts]
